J7 London Bombings Dossier

Index 07 - Moorgate Station

Official version of events

There was no explosion at Moorgate. Initial reports that there was were in error, attributable to the sounds of other explosions echoing down tunnels.

Query

Was there an explosion at the station, or on a train at the station?

Exhibits (M1 - M10)

Two witnesses refer to having been evacuated from the station but there are no direct accounts of an explosion there. The most persuasive indications come from official documents.

The London Ambulance Service (M7) confirmed that they dispatched resources to Moorgate Underground Station.

London Underground’s log for the morning of the explosion reports that at 9.09am there was loss of a high tension cable between Mansell Street and Moorgate. This was, according to the London Evening Standard (M9) :”the result of an explosion”.

London Fire Brigade (M10) have confirmed that at 0953 a rescue unit was redeployed from Liverpool Street to Moorgate.

Related Information

Moorgate to Liverpool Street (M-LS1-10)

Summary

It seems that there was an explosion at or in the vicinity of Moorgate Station. It is inconceivable that the Fire Brigade would switch resources to there an hour after the original blasts due to a misapprehension that the noise resulting from them was another bomb.

It could be that the explosion was on a train approaching the station as per Moorgate to Liverpool Street (supra.)

We moved to London from Melbourne only last week and I must say that these attacks are very frightening. We live in an apartment very close to a number of the bomb blasts (ie. Aldgate and Moorgate), so it's very close to home. I was out at the Moorgate Post Office at about 9.30am this morning and within sight of where one the blasts at Moorgate Tube Station occurred. There were a lot of emergency vehicles about, but it wasn't until I got home and turned on the TV that I knew what had happened. There's a lot of confusion and people are very anxious. The whole transport system in London has been closed and everyone has been told to stay indoors. We both talked about the possibility of something like this happening in London, although we didn't expect for it to happen so soon after arrival. I know a number of our family and friends back home have tried to get through to us, so I wanted to let everyone know that we're ok. That's not to say that we're not a little shaken though.
