Index 04 - Aldgate East to Liverpool Street Station
Official version of events
There was no explosion between Aldgate East and Liverpool Street but the track was damaged as a result of the bomb on the train on the adjacent Circle Line.
Was there an explosion on a train travelling between these two stations (on the Hammersmith and City Line). Was this the blast referred to in the Aldgate East folder?
Exhibits (AE-LS 1-10)
These consist of media reports (some containing witness statements) and reports of official statements. Of particular significance are:
Azima Aziz (AE-LS2
) which gives a graphic report of an explosion.
The Prime Minister (AE-LS9
) (A statement in similar terms was made by Baroness Scotland in the House of Lords on the same day)
). This was issued on the 25th July and confirms that the Hammersmith and City Line in the region of Aldgate East - Liverpool Street was at that time still closed.
Aldgate East (AE1- AE10).
There seems no doubt that there was an explosion on a train between Aldgate East and Liverpool Street. This may well have been the blast referred to in the Aldgate East folder.
A counter-terrorism source told us the device was probably left on the floor of a train leaving Aldgate East Underground station.

Survivors described scenes of total chaos. Mustafa Kurtuldu, 24, from Hackney, told Times Online at Aldgate East: "The train seemed to almost lift up off the rails. It sounded like an impact. It went white and there were flames outside the train, but they died down quickly."

Aldgate East: 'Smoke poured into the carriage, but we couldn't break the windows
At 8.50am, Manjit Dhanjal was sitting on a packed Circle Line train between Aldgate East and Liverpool Street station, on her way to work in the City.
The blast occurred in a carriage at the front of the train, around 50 metres from the Aldgate East platform.
