Index 02 - Aldgate Station to Liverpool Street

Official version of events

The only explosion was on a Circle Line train, number 204, travelling from Liverpool Street towards Aldgate.

Query

Was there also an explosion on a train travelling from Aldgate to Liverpool Street?

Exhibits (A-LS1a – A-LS10)

These include press reports; photographs; and a graphic all indicating that there was a blast on a train leading into Liverpool Street.

There are also a number of witness statements. The strongest of these appears to be (A-LS2) from “leedad” describing an explosion on a Metropolitan Line train just after leaving Aldgate. In total six of the sources make reference to a Metropolitan Line train.

A-LS7 and A-LS10 contain reports of police statements confirming that the train was heading towards Liverpool Street.

Related Information

Aldgate Station (A1- A10).

Summary

It seems clear that there was an explosion on a train travelling between Aldgate and Liverpool Street and that this was on the Metropolitan Line.

It is possible that this was the incident referred to in the Aldgate Station folder.

Arriving at Aldgate, I was rushing, my only thoughts at that point was umm...should I get a coffee and get a copy of the metro (free newspaper) I didn't get a coffee and there was no free papers in the stand so I just went through to catch my train, good news my train was in the station platform 3 the metropolitan, I quickly jumped on one of the carriage an empty one and sat down, the train started to move, I picked up one of the papers left on the seat and opened the back page, started reading ''French lash out after bid failure' then a big bang.

The first went off at 8:51 a.m. local time on the Metropolitan Line as it went through a tunnel between Aldgate and Liverpool Street, in London's financial district.

Robert Andrews, who was on the train, said that the explosion blew doors off the train and left its roof "twisted, mangled mess."

"We saw a flash and heard this massive bang," Mr. Andrews, a 28-year-old sales manager, told the Evening Standard newspaper. "Suddenly, smoke and soot filled the carriage through the air vents." When he got off the train, he said, he saw two people lying on the tracks, one of them a man, face down with a jacket covering his head. It was not clear whether they were dead.
