Index 26 - Tavistock Square Bus Explosion

Official version of events

30 bus which was at the junction of Tavistock Square and Upper Woburn place killing 13 people, plus the bomber, Hasib Hussain. More than 110 people were injured.

Query

Were the numbers of dead and injured exaggerated so that casualties from other undisclosed incidents could be “allocated” to this one?

Exhibits (TB1a - TB10)

TB1a TB2 & TB4 are photographs that seem to contradict media reports of mutilated bodies lying beside the bus. (The object in the foreground of TB4 may be a body wrapped in a tarpaulin or sheet!)

TB6 & TB7 indicate that the bus was not as crowded as had been reported. (Although the former almost certainly contains an underestimate!)

TB1b TB9 & TB10 make reference to considerable numbers of passengers who were mobile after leaving the bus.

TB8 refers to the operation to save the injured that took place in the courtyard of the BMA building. There are two confirmed deaths, and a “significant number” of seriously injured.

Other Bus Explosions

Summary

The official figure of 14 deaths is almost certainly wrong. For that figure to be approached all the seriously injured passengers treated at the BMA would have had to die from their injuries. It is probable that the figure of two deaths given on the afternoon of the 7th was accurate. One or two may have died subsequently. The figure of 110 injured cannot be correct. There were not that many passengers on the bus and the photographs rule out the notion of large numbers of passers-by being caught up in the blast!

I'm just feeling unbelievably lucky. But it was strange, everything was remarkably calm. There was nobody screaming and no pandemonium. I watched about 20 people just get up out of their seats and climb down the back of the bus.

Everyone was helping everyone else. They climbed down the bus and over the debris."

"There was metal, there was wood, everything just straight up in the air.

"We did not see any bodies. They got us off the street so fast, and around the corner because they said there could be a second blast.
