J7 London Bombings Dossier

Index 14 - Devices Used

Official version of events

The bombs were carried in back packs and triggered manually by the four bombers.

Query

Were at least some of the explosions caused by devices hidden in the trains, or on the track?

Exhibits (D1 – D10)

D1. This photograph of one of the Edgware Road trains would seem to indicate that the centre of the explosion was on the floor of the carriage.

D2, D3, D4 & D6 all contain references to the floor/tiles/maintenance covers blowing up.

D7. Bruce Lait who was injured on the Liverpool Street-Aldgate train states “ The metal was pushed upwards as if the bomb was underneath the train”!

D9. Ian Wade, who was said to be on the Piccadilly line train (but see Kings Cross to Euston Square folder) states specifically “the explosion was on the ceiling of the carriage in front”!

D10. The photograph here shows considerable damage to the roof of a carriage!

Related Information

Various.

Summary

It would be interesting to hear the views of an explosives expert but prima facia there are strong indications that devices could have been left on, or underneath trains. Could this have been done by extremist employees infiltrated into the workforce?

Edgware Road, 9.17am

The Circle line tube train was just pulling out of Edgware Road station towards Paddington when it was rocked by a huge blast that blew the maintenance covers from the floor of several carriages

Anita Kinselley, 29, from Essex, her face blackened by smoke, was somewhere towards the middle of the train when the explosion occurred. "The tiles on the floor of my carriage suddenly shot up.

As they made their way out, a policeman pointed out where the bomb had been.

"The policeman said 'mind that hole, that's where the bomb was'. The metal was pushed upwards as if the bomb was underneath the train. They seem to think the bomb was left in a bag, but I don't remember anybody being where the bomb was, or any bag," he said.

Joanna Myerson, 29, covered in black soot and shaking with shock, was travelling from West Hampstead on a Circle Line train at 8.56 from Farringdon to Aldgate.

"All of a sudden everything went white and we got thrown to the floor and there was smoke and fire outside. It sounded like an impact almost.

"You could see a sort of electrical fire outside the carriage, on the wall of the tunnel.

D9

"We could just make out what was in front but nothing else. The explosion was on the ceiling of the carriage in front and all the glass from the carriage had caved in.
