J7 London Bombings Dossier

Index 11 - Edgware Road Station

Official version of events

There was no explosion at the station itself. The only one that took place was on Circle Line train 216 heading westwards towards Paddington Station.

Query

Was there a bomb at the station? Either on the platform or on a train stationary at the platform?

Exhibits (ERS1- ERS10b)

ERS4 states specifically that the train (carrying Kenneth Whitehead) was hit by an explosion whilst at the platform.

ERS5Bindesh” states inter alia “The platform was full of blood”

ERS6Ivan Radulovic” – “There was lots of blood on the platform at Edgware Road.”

ERS10a & b. This BBC feature reports the reopening of the station on he 29th July –“which showed no sign of the devastation caused by the blast”

Related Information

Edgware Road (ERS1-ERS10b)

Summary

It is plain that there was a severe blast at the station which the authorities have kept secret. Most likely it was on a train stopped at a platform; or possibly, as Ivan Radulovic (supra) suggests:- “just coming in to Edgware Road.” Were the early reports that the explosion on Circle Line train 216 was strong enough to blow a hole in the tunnel wall and damage a train on an adjacent platform (see Edgware Road folder - supra) put out as cover?

At about 0920, I took a call from a rather flustered sounding policewoman from Paddington police station.

“There’s been an incident at Edgware Road station!” she said.

“An explosion?” I said.

“How did you know?” she said, confused.

.... when there was an explosion at Edgeware [sic] Road station as his train was at the platform. Five people have now been confirmed dead at the station.

Head chef Kenneth, 54, escaped with concussion as windows shattered and smoke billowed through his carriage towards the rear as the front of the train bore the brunt of the bomb. Five people have now been confirmed dead at the station.

We managed to get out very quickly and it was all an unreal experience.

"The front of the train looked badly damaged and I was told there had been some deaths when we got out,

I was in Edgware Road train station, waiting for my friend. There was a big explosion. I was lucky to escape from that blast. I became faint and a police officer woke me up by putting water on my face. When I woke up I saw a very deadly scene which I will never forget in my life. The platform was full of blood, people were screaming and shouting to get off the platform.

ERS6

Ivan Radulovic, 27, was travelling on a westbound train on Circle Line at 8.50am on Thursday last week, when a bomb went off on an eastbound train just yards away from where he stood in the rear carriage of his train.

The train was probably just coming into Edgeware Road and there was a huge explosion. I thought it was the carriage next to ours.

The carriage was totally obliterated, including its roof. The only thing left were the yellow bars and everything else was blown away — the force had been that great.

"The debris had been cleared off the track but it was covered in blood and there was lots of blood on the platform at Edgeware Road.

ERS10a&b

The station was damaged when a bomb was set off on a Circle Line train, killing six people.

Platforms and trains at Edgware Road remained virtually empty during the usual morning rush hour.

Some may have avoided the station, which showed no sign of the devastation caused by the blast,

Engineers got the station repaired just eight days after it was handed back by the police.
